Career choices for poles
I like television personality Stephen Colbert, and I like picture books, so of course I grabbed I am a Pole as soon as I became aware of it. Alas, I can't recommend it. It's a first-person narrative by a pole, who is trying to figure out what kind of pole (or even poll) he is, or wants to be. It's not funny. It seems to be trying to make some sort of general diversity-related point, but what exactly that might be was unclear to me.
Also, what's with the parenthetical comment "And So Can You!" in the title. Perhaps this is some terribly clever word play that I'm not getting. But in point of fact, I do not get it -- it doesn't make any sense.
I just looked at several positive reviews of this book. They all call it hilarious. It didn't make me laugh once. OK, I will agree that several joke-shaped objects are recognizable in the text and the pictures But it is not enough for words and picture to have the form of a joke. If it's not funny, I'm not interested. I cannot imagine I am a Pole becoming a four-year-old's favorite book.
