Teenage kids with the creepiest parents ever
Runaways is a TV series (three seasons, 33 episodes) that aired on Hulu from 2017-2019, set in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). I’m a Marvel fan, and I had run out of TV shows to watch (once I reached the end of Wednesday,) so I’ve been watching an episode of Runaways each day for the last 5 weeks. It is not, sorry to say, Matvels’ best product (and cannot compare to Netflix’s Wednesday). Toward the end I kept watching only because of the “almost there” feeling.
But it begins better than it ends. The show is centered around a group of six teenage kids: Alex, Chase, Katrina, Gert, Molly, and Nico. Except for Alex, they all have powers of some sort. Alex gets by with just being smart. They live in the Los Angeles area with their very wealthy parents. The parents are the leaders of a charity organization called Pride, which we (and the kids) almost immediately learn is a front for a criminal organization. The kids run away from their parents and try to bring justice to them. Of course, some of the kids have “feelings” for each other, so there’s a lot of that Young Adult romance dynamic, which, to be honest, is not my favorite thing in the world.
What I most disliked, though, was the silly mystical nonsense. The world-building is perfunctory and will make you roll your eyes. It transpires that Pride is run by an alien. In Season 3 we have a battle with Morgan Le Fay (of Arthurian legend), who was not even interesting as a villain.
In summary, I enjoyed the first season, enjoyed some of the second, and really didn’t like the third.
