Am I asking too much?
Scott Lynch's The Wizard Who Kept Himself Suspicious is the fifth story in the Amazon Original Magic and Mystery series. It is the story of a conclave of eight wizards who meet on an island every thirteen years. It's a succession of things that happen to and among the wizards during one conclave. It is evident that many of the things that happen are intended to be funny.
The Wizard Who Kept Himself Suspicious would be better if rather than one thing happening, then another thing happening, then another, there were some sort of coherent plot. There isn't really.
Is it too much to ask that, in addition to jokes, a story (1) have a plot, (2) have well-drawn and coherent characters, and (3) that the plot and the characters work together in the sense that the action is driven by the characters behaving in ways consistent with their natures?
i guess it is obvious that I did not love this. I didn't quite hate it -- it had its moments, and it's bearable because it's short.
Nuff said.
