Slow Time Between the Stars
John Scalzi
John Scalzi's Slow Time Between the Stars is not quite a story. Tim Burton famously said,
Every story has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Not necessarily in that order.
Slow Time has a beginning and a middle, but no end. Since it's Scalzi, it cannot he argued that this is unintentional. Scalzi might of course dispute my claim that Slow Time doesn't have an end, but he would without doubt understand what I mean by it and possibly even concede that there is some justice in what I say.
It is, of course, not necessarily a bad thing for something written down to not be a story. I am very fond of Ben Aaronovitch's Moments, most of which are even less story-like than Slow Time.
Slow Time is indeed about a starship that goes rogue. That description, however, evokes an entirely inaccurate image of the events that occur. It's called Slow Time for a reason. I'm not going to describe the plot any further.
I feel that this is an experiment that didn't quite work (which is also what I think of the first of Aaronovitch's moments). Another similar attempt might yet work. It's interesting and thought-provoking, and perhaps that's all that Scalzi was after.
